The Reality of Calling

God calls missionaries. This isn't a vague spiritual feeling or a general sense that missions sounds interesting. God's call is specific, compelling, and personal. It grips a person and won't let go. Paul described his own calling in stark terms: "Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!" (1 Corinthians 9:16). He wasn't drawn to ministry. He was driven to it.

Scripture shows this pattern throughout. God called Moses to a specific people and a specific task. He called Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the disciples. He called Paul on the road to Damascus. In each case, the calling was particular, not general. It was tied to the individual's gifts, history, and circumstances.

This pattern continues. God calls missionaries to specific people groups, specific regions, specific types of ministry. One missionary feels compelled to work among university students in Southeast Asia. Another carries a burden for unreached villages in Sub-Saharan Africa. Another has a clear vision for training church planters in Latin America. These callings are as varied as the people who receive them.

Supporting Individual Vision

Tentmakers Bible Mission supports the vision and call of our missionaries. We don't fit missionaries into a predetermined program or tell them what their ministry should look like. The TBM board works with our missionaries to help them fulfill the ministry that God has called them to.

This approach stands in contrast to mission organizations that deploy missionaries based on organizational need. "We need someone in this country. You have the right skills. Will you go?" There is nothing wrong with that approach in principle. But TBM operates differently. We believe the missionary discerns God's call. Our role is to help them fulfill it.

In practice, this means we spend time listening. What has God laid on your heart? What type of ministry do you feel equipped and burdened to do? Where do your gifts, your experience, and God's leading converge? These conversations shape how we support each missionary.

Committed and Driven

Our missionaries serve in their mission field because they recognize God's purpose in calling them there. This isn't a job they can quit when it gets hard. It's not a career move or an adventure. It's obedience to a specific call on their life.

That level of commitment sustains missionaries through the inevitable challenges of cross-cultural ministry. Language learning is grueling. Cultural adjustment is real. Loneliness can be overwhelming. Ministry often moves more slowly than expected. What keeps missionaries going is not determination or optimism. It is the conviction that God called them to this specific place for this specific purpose.

Paul faced beatings, imprisonment, shipwreck, and constant danger. He kept going because he knew God had called him to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. That clarity carried him through everything. Modern missionaries need the same clarity.

Diverse Callings, Unified Purpose

TBM's approach to calling means our missionaries look different from one another. One plants churches in villages. Another trains pastors in a city. One works with university students. Another focuses on Bible translation. One tentmakes as a teacher. Another receives full support. This diversity reflects God's creativity in calling.

But beneath the diversity lies a unified purpose: making disciples and planting churches. Every TBM missionary shares this commitment even as they pursue a unique calling. We are not scattered in different directions. We are running the same race on different tracks.

This combination of individual calling and shared purpose is what defines TBM. We celebrate the vision God has given each missionary. We support them in fulfilling it. And we unite around the central mission of establishing reproducing churches in every corner of the world.
